Problem Gambling - It’s an Addiction

Have you ever considered that gambling could become a problem or even, for some, reach a level of addiction? Gambling is a widespread activity in our nation, from lotteries and casinos to various styles of games and betting, and we’d like to take this opportunity to increase public knowledge about problem gambling and its very real consequences. Although many people take part in gambling activities without serious consequences, a percentage of people who gamble do experience signs that gambling is becoming a problem behavior. These signs might include spending more time and money gambling and neglecting other responsibilities, families, and work. Problem gamblers often make bets with money they cannot afford to lose and continue to chase their losses while denying that they have a problem. Problem gambling deeply affects a gambler’s mental and physical well-being, family, and financial stability.

NY Council on Problem Gambling Report

The Council reports that regular involvement with continued forms of gambling and high gambling losses are the factors most closely associated with problem gambling and the likelihood of problem gambling is higher in areas where gambling establishments and opportunities are available.

Local Findings

A recent Jefferson County phone survey found that an estimated $43,935,000 is spent on gambling activities per year in our area.
